Method

  1. Step 1

Heat the oven (opens in a new tab) to 200 °C. Mix the beef with the onion (opens in a new tab), peppers (opens in a new tab), chilli, garlic (opens in a new tab), parsley (opens in a new tab), spices, salt and pepper until evenly combined.

    • 8 min
    • 200°C
  2. Step 2

Split each bread open along one edge and spread a quarter of the meat in a thin, even layer right to the edges. Press closed.

    • 5 min

A thin layer cooks through at the same rate the bread crisps.

  3. Step 3

Brush both sides with oil and lay on a baking tray. Bake, turning once, until the bread is crisp and the meat is cooked through.

Food safety: Minced beef should reach 71 °C in the centre.

  4. Step 4

Rest for a minute, then cut into halves or quarters and serve hot.

    How these numbers were made

    • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
    • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
    • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.

    Good to know

    Tips

    • Spread the meat thinly right to the edges so every bite has filling and it cooks at the same rate as the bread crisps.

    Common mistakes

    • Leaving the onion wet — squeeze out its juice or the bread turns soggy.

    Serve with

    • Serve with tahini sauce, pickles and a simple tomato salad.

    Storage

    • Refrigerate cooked hawawshi up to 2 days.

    Reheating

    • Re-crisp in a hot oven or a dry frying pan.

    Variations

    • Pan-fried hawawshi: Cook in a heavy frying pan over medium heat, pressing down, for about 8 minutes per side.
