Method

  1. Step 1

Wash the watermelon (opens in a new tab) skin before cutting so the knife does not drag dirt into the flesh. Cut away the rind and cube the flesh, removing the black seeds.

  2. Step 2

Blend the watermelon (opens in a new tab) with the lime juice (opens in a new tab) for about 30 seconds — it liquefies on its own, no water needed.

Pulse rather than run the blender for long, or the juice turns frothy.

  3. Step 3

Pour through a sieve for a smooth, pulp-free juice (or leave it pulpy). Serve over ice with a torn mint (opens in a new tab) leaf or two.

How these numbers were made

  • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
  • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
  • Optional ingredients are not included: mint, ice.
  • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.

Good to know

Tips

  • A ripe melon sounds hollow when tapped and has a creamy-yellow patch where it rested on the ground.

Common mistakes

  • Over-blending white seeds into the juice, which makes it gritty.

Serve with

  • Pour into ice-lolly moulds for an easy frozen treat.

Food safety

  • Fresh, unpasteurised juice has not been heat-treated. Wash produce well under running water, use clean equipment, drink it the same day and keep it chilled; pregnant people, young children, older adults and anyone with a weakened immune system may prefer pasteurised juice.
  • Cut melon is a known food-safety risk once left warm: keep cut watermelon and its juice refrigerated and discard after a day.

Storage

  • Keeps 1 day covered in the fridge; it separates, so stir before serving.

Variations

  • Sinh tố dưa hấu style (Vietnam): In Vietnam watermelon is often blended with a little sugar and lots of ice into a thick, slushy drink.
