Method

  1. Step 1

Pour the boiling water over the tea bags (opens in a new tab) in a heatproof jug and steep for 5 minutes, then remove the bags without squeezing.

    • 5 min

Food safety: Take care with boiling water.

  2. Step 2

Stir in the sugar (opens in a new tab) while the tea is hot until dissolved, then add the lemon juice (opens in a new tab).

    • 1 min
  3. Step 3

Cool to room temperature, then chill for at least an hour.

    • 60 min

Chilling hot tea very fast can make it cloudy; it is still fine to drink.

  4. Step 4

Serve over ice with lemon (opens in a new tab) slices and mint (opens in a new tab).

How these numbers were made

  • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
  • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
  • Optional ingredients are not included: lemon, mint.
  • Not counted (tiny amounts or “to taste”): black tea leaves.
  • Ice: Frozen water; same composition as water.
  • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.
  • Values are estimates for guidance, not for medical dosing. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. FoodData Central, 2019. fdc.nal.usda.gov.

Good to know

Tips

  • For crystal-clear tea, cold-brew instead: steep the bags in cold water in the fridge for 8–12 hours.

Common mistakes

  • Over-steeping or squeezing the bags, which makes the tea bitter.

Storage

  • Keeps 3 days in a covered jug in the fridge.

Variations

  • Southern sweet tea (United States): Much sweeter iced tea served throughout the southern United States.
  • Peach iced tea: Stir in 200 ml peach purée or juice before chilling.
