How these numbers were made

  • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
  • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
  • Optional ingredients are not included: black salt (kala namak), ice.
  • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.

Good to know

Tips

  • Roast the cumin seeds in a dry pan until a shade darker, then grind them — ready-ground cumin tastes flat.

Common mistakes

  • Using too little water — chaas should be thin and drinkable, unlike lassi.

Serve with

  • Serve alongside a thali, biryani or spicy misal pav.

Storage

  • Keeps 1 day refrigerated; stir before serving.

Variations

  • Tempered neer mor: Tamil version with a mustard-seed and curry-leaf tempering poured on top.
