Ingredients

1 tall glass

Method

  1. Step 1

If sweetening, dissolve the sugar (opens in a new tab) in a teaspoon of hot water to make a quick syrup and put it in a tall glass.

    • 1 min
  2. Step 2

Fill the glass with ice and add the cold water.

    • 1 min
  3. Step 3

Pull a double espresso (opens in a new tab) and pour it straight over the ice. Stir and serve.

Pouring espresso onto water and ice, not the other way round, keeps a little crema on top.

How these numbers were made

  • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
  • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
  • Optional ingredients are not included: sugar.
  • Ice: Frozen water; same composition as water.
  • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.

Good to know

Tips

  • Use filtered water and large, clear ice cubes — with so few ingredients, off-tasting water or ice shows.

Common mistakes

  • Pouring the hot espresso into an empty glass and adding ice afterwards — the shot shocks, goes sour and melts the ice faster.

Storage

  • Make to order; drink before the ice melts.

Variations

  • Shakerato (Italy): Shake a double espresso with a little sugar syrup and ice until frothy and strain into a chilled glass.
