Method

  1. Step 1

Heat the water to 80–90 °C (boil it and wait about a minute) and pour it into a warmed mug.

  2. Step 2

Pull a double espresso (opens in a new tab) straight on top of the hot water; pouring the coffee onto the water keeps some of the crema.

  3. Step 3

Add a splash of milk (opens in a new tab) if you like, stir and serve.

    How these numbers were made

    • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
    • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
    • Optional ingredients are not included: milk.
    • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.
    • Values are estimates for guidance, not for medical dosing. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. FoodData Central, 2019. fdc.nal.usda.gov.

    Good to know

    Tips

    • Water straight off a rolling boil makes the drink taste flat and burnt; let it cool slightly.

    Common mistakes

    • Pouring boiling water onto the espresso, which scorches it and destroys the crema.

    Storage

    • Make to order; reheated americano tastes flat and bitter.

    Variations

    • Long black (Australia): Australian and New Zealand version: less water (about 100 ml) with the espresso always poured on top to keep the crema.
