Method

  1. Step 1

Pour the oat milk (opens in a new tab) into the blender (opens in a new tab) and add the oats (opens in a new tab). Leave for 5 minutes to soften — this makes a much smoother, less gritty smoothie.

  2. Step 2

Add the banana (opens in a new tab) and the frozen berries (and chia (opens in a new tab), if using) and blend on high for 45–60 seconds until thick and completely smooth.

  3. Step 3

Taste and blend in the maple syrup (opens in a new tab) if the berries are tart. Serve at once — it thickens on standing.

How these numbers were made

  • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
  • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
  • Optional ingredients are not included: maple syrup, chia seeds.
  • Oat milk: Unsweetened rice milk used for oat drink (similar energy and carbohydrate; oat drinks vary and may be fortified).
  • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.
  • Values are estimates for guidance, not for medical dosing. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. FoodData Central, 2019. fdc.nal.usda.gov.

Good to know

Tips

  • For an overnight version, soak the oats in the oat milk in the fridge and blend with the fruit in the morning.

Common mistakes

  • Blending dry oats straight in — they stay gritty.

Storage

  • Keeps up to 24 hours in a sealed jar in the fridge; it thickens, so loosen with a splash of milk.
