Plus chilling the espresso.

Ingredients

1 large glass (about 400 ml)

Method

  1. Step 1

Brew the espresso (opens in a new tab) and chill it in the fridge (or over a bowl of ice) until cold; hot coffee melts the ice and makes the drink thin.

  2. Step 3

Blend on high for 30–45 seconds until thick and smooth with no lumps of ice. Taste and add sugar (opens in a new tab) if needed.

  3. Step 4

Pour into a chilled glass and top with whipped cream if you like.

How these numbers were made

  • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
  • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
  • Optional ingredients are not included: heavy cream.
  • Ice: Frozen water; same composition as water.
  • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.

Good to know

Tips

  • Freeze leftover coffee in an ice-cube tray and use it instead of plain ice for a stronger drink that doesn't dilute.

Common mistakes

  • Blending too long, which warms and thins the drink.

Storage

  • Drink straight away; it separates within 10 minutes.

Variations

  • Mocha frappé: Add 1 tbsp cocoa or chocolate sauce.
  • Caramel frappé: Add 1 tbsp caramel sauce and drizzle more on top.
Is this the same as a Greek frappé?

No. A Greek frappé is instant coffee shaken with a little water into a thick foam and served over ice; it is not blended with ice.
