Method

  1. Step 1

Pour the near-boiling water over the hojicha leaves (opens in a new tab) and steep for 3 minutes. Roasted tea tolerates hotter water than other green teas.

  2. Step 2

Strain the strong tea into a mug, pressing the leaves gently, and stir in sweetener if using.

How these numbers were made

  • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
  • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
  • Optional ingredients are not included: sugar.
  • Not counted (tiny amounts or “to taste”): hojicha (roasted green tea).
  • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.

Good to know

Tips

  • Hojicha powder whisked into a little hot water makes a quicker, stronger base than leaves.

Common mistakes

  • Boiling the milk, which masks hojicha's delicate roasted flavour with a cooked-milk taste.

Storage

  • Make to order.

Variations

  • Iced hojicha latte: Brew the tea double strength, cool it and pour over ice and cold milk.
