  2. Step 2

Pour the cold milk (opens in a new tab) and cocoa syrup into the blender (opens in a new tab), then add the slightly softened ice cream (opens in a new tab).

  3. Step 3

Blend on low for 15–20 seconds, just until smooth. Stop as soon as it comes together — over-blending warms and thins the shake.

  4. Step 4

Pour into the chilled glasses and top with whipped cream if you like. Serve with straws and spoons.

How these numbers were made

  • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
  • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
  • Optional ingredients are not included: heavy cream.
  • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.

Good to know

Tips

  • The ratio of roughly 2 parts ice cream to 1 part milk (by volume) gives a shake that is thick but still drinkable through a straw.

Common mistakes

  • Adding ice, which dilutes the shake and leaves icy shards.

Storage

  • Drink immediately.

Variations

  • Chocolate malt: Add malted milk powder for a toasty, biscuity flavour — see chocolate malted milkshake.
