Chemex-style glass pour-over brewer
An hourglass-shaped glass carafe that holds a thick folded paper filter; brews several cups of very clean filter coffee.
Specialist · No power needed
What it is
A one-piece glass brewer and serving carafe with a narrow waist, usually with a wooden collar and leather tie. Its bonded paper filters are thicker than most, which holds back more oils and fine particles, so the coffee is light-bodied and very clear. Use a medium-coarse grind, coarser than for a V60, because the thick filter drains more slowly.
What it’s for: Brewing three to eight cups of clean, bright pour-over coffee that is served from the same vessel.
How to use it
- Open the folded filter so three layers sit against the spout side, rinse it with hot water and pour the rinse water away.
- Add medium-coarse coffee at about 1:16 (for example 30 g to 500 g water).
- Bloom with about twice the coffee's weight of water at 93–96 °C for 45 seconds.
- Pour the rest in stages; total brew time is about 4–5 minutes. Lift out the filter and swirl before serving.
Good to know
- Tasks
- brewing filter coffee for several people, making iced pour-over
- Materials
- borosilicate glass, wood, leather
- Care and cleaning
- Remove the wooden collar and wash the glass by hand or with a bottle brush; it is fragile.
- Limitations
- Needs its own thick filters; slower than a cone; fragile.
Safety
- Glass can crack if heated directly on a hob or shocked with cold water.
- Hold by the collar; the glass gets hot.
If you don’t have one
- Pour-over dripper (V60-style cone) — Similar clean cup, smaller batches.
- Filter coffee maker — Automatic drip for larger batches.
