AeroPress-style press brewer
A plastic tube and plunger that steeps coffee for a minute or two, then presses it through a small paper filter.
Useful to have · No power needed
What it is
A two-part brewer: a chamber with a perforated cap holding a small round paper (or metal) filter, and a rubber-sealed plunger. Coffee steeps in the chamber, then gentle hand pressure pushes the liquid through the filter into the cup. It combines immersion and pressure (well below espresso pressure), is quick, portable and forgiving, and can make a clean single cup or a strong concentrate for diluting.
What it’s for: Fast single cups of clean, full-flavoured coffee, at home or travelling.
How to use it
- Rinse the paper filter in the cap, then fit the cap to the chamber and stand it on a sturdy mug.
- Add medium-fine coffee (about 15 g) and 200–240 g water at 80–95 °C; stir.
- Fit the plunger to stop dripping and steep for 1½–2 minutes.
- Press slowly and steadily for about 30 seconds, stopping when you hear a hiss.
Good to know
- Tasks
- brewing a single cup of coffee, making coffee concentrate for milk drinks, brewing while travelling
- Materials
- polypropylene or copolyester plastic, silicone seal
- Care and cleaning
- Push the puck of grounds into the bin, rinse the seal and chamber; it is easy to keep clean.
- Limitations
- One or two cups at a time; it is not an espresso maker, even though it can make strong coffee.
Safety
- Press on a sturdy mug that won't tip; never force the plunger hard.
If you don’t have one
- French press / cafetière — Steep 4 minutes; fuller body with some sediment.
- Moka pot — Stronger, more concentrated coffee.
