Ingredients

1 glass or mug (about 260 ml)

Method

  1. Step 1

Pull a double decaf espresso (opens in a new tab) (18 g in, about 36 g out in 25–30 seconds) into a warmed glass or mug.

  2. Step 2

Steam the 220 ml milk (opens in a new tab) to 60–65 °C — hot to touch but not boiling — letting in a little air at the start for a silky microfoam.

Food safety: Steam wands and freshly steamed milk are scalding: purge the wand away from your hand and wipe it straight after use.

  3. Step 3

Tap and swirl the jug until glossy, then pour steadily into the espresso, finishing with a thin layer of foam. Sweeten if you like.

How these numbers were made

  • Calculated from USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy) per-100 g values and the listed quantities.
  • *Per 100 g of combined raw ingredients; the cooked dish may weigh more or less.
  • Optional ingredients are not included: sugar.
  • Decaf espresso: Regular restaurant-prepared espresso used as a stand-in; decaffeination removes most of the caffeine but barely changes energy and macronutrients.
  • “—” means the value isn’t known for enough of the ingredients; it is never zero by default.
  • Values are estimates for guidance, not for medical dosing. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. FoodData Central, 2019. fdc.nal.usda.gov.

Good to know

Tips

  • No machine? Make strong decaf in a moka pot or AeroPress and froth hot milk with a handheld frother.

Storage

  • Make to order and drink straight away; milk foam collapses and coffee loses its aroma within minutes.
